The Founder

Charles moved to Hong Kong in 1987 aged 22 to set up an art consultancy for the hospitality industry in the new emerging Asian market. Later, as well as art consultancy, he worked on exhibitions which included the first John Lennon art show in Asia, and published two photographic books on Hong Kong, one using 30 of the world's top photographers.
He moved to Myanmar (Burma) in 1994, where he was one of the first non-diplomats to be given a permit to live there. He focused on the traditional teak and rattan industry, worked on designs with the Orient-Express boat Road to Mandalay, and published the first coffee table book on the country, Myanmar Land of the Spirits. Charles was also the publisher for the Royal Geographical Society magazine, which confirmed his passion for the environment, travel and conservation.
In 2000, Charles headed to Bali and set up ibal Designs, the name itself a play on the name of the famous island. He has since worked on over 200 hotels and had the pleasure of working with some of the most iconic brands in the world — Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Capella, Hyatt, Edition, Ritz-Carlton and Rosewood, to name a few. He also set up Charles Orchard a furniture brand, which combines his passion for design inspired by both Eastern and Western cultural influences, using materials such as rattan, bamboo and lacquer.
